How it works

Why percentile instead of a fixed category?

Adult BMI uses fixed cutoffs — 18.5, 25, and 30 — because an adult's healthy body composition stays roughly stable once growth stops. Children are different: a healthy amount of body fat changes constantly as they age, differs between boys and girls, and shifts again during puberty. A BMI of 17 might be perfectly average for a 7-year-old but unusually low for a 15-year-old. Applying one fixed number across all ages would misclassify most kids as underweight or overweight simply because they are younger or older than the "average" the number was built for.

To solve this, pediatric BMI is compared against other children of the same age and sex, producing a percentile: the share of same-age, same-sex peers whose BMI is at or below the child's own value. This calculator estimates that percentile using a simplified reference table of average BMI and spread (standard deviation) at several ages for boys and girls, linearly interpolated for the exact age entered, and converted to a percentile with the standard normal distribution.

This is an approximation. The CDC's official growth charts are built from detailed LMS (Lambda-Mu-Sigma) tables calculated for every age in months, which capture the skewed, non-symmetric shape of real BMI distributions far more precisely than the simplified curve used here. Use this tool for a quick estimate, and rely on official CDC growth charts or your child's pediatrician for anything clinical.

How the percentile is calculated.

    Calculate BMI

    BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m). Imperial inputs are converted to metric first.

    Find the reference mean and SD for age

    Using a simplified table of mean BMI and standard deviation (SD) at ages 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20, the calculator linearly interpolates between the two nearest ages to get a mean and SD for the exact age entered.

  3. 03

    Calculate the z-score

    z = (BMI − mean for age) ÷ SD for age. This tells you how many standard deviations the child's BMI is from the average for their age and sex.

    Convert z to a percentile

    The z-score is converted to a percentile using the standard normal cumulative distribution function (CDF), percentile = Φ(z) × 100, the same numerical method used by our Z-Score Calculator.

    Apply CDC category bands

    Below the 5th percentile is classified Underweight, 5th–84th is Healthy weight, 85th–94th is Overweight, and 95th or above is Obesity — these category cutoffs match the real CDC standard.

Why do children use BMI percentile instead of the adult BMI categories?

Children and teens are still growing, so the amount of body fat that is healthy changes constantly with age and differs between boys and girls, especially through puberty. A fixed BMI cutoff like the adult 'normal weight' range of 18.5–24.9 would misclassify most kids, since a healthy 8-year-old and a healthy 16-year-old have very different average BMI values. Instead, a child's BMI is compared to other children of the same age and sex, producing a percentile that shows where they fall relative to their peers.

What do the percentile categories mean?

The CDC defines four standard weight categories based on BMI-for-age percentile: below the 5th percentile is Underweight, the 5th to 84th percentile is Healthy weight, the 85th to 94th percentile is Overweight, and the 95th percentile or above is classified as Obesity. For example, a percentile of 60 means the child's BMI is higher than about 60% of children of the same age and sex, and falls in the healthy weight range.

Can this calculator be used for adults?

No. This tool is designed specifically for children and teens roughly ages 2 to 20, using pediatric growth reference data. Adults should use a standard adult BMI calculator, which applies fixed category cutoffs (underweight, normal, overweight, obese) instead of age- and sex-based percentiles, since adult body composition no longer changes with growth the way a child's does.

What information do I need to calculate a child's BMI percentile?

You need the child's age in years (decimals like 8.5 are supported for more precision), sex assigned at birth (male or female, since reference ranges differ), current height, and current weight. Height and weight can be entered in metric (centimeters and kilograms) or imperial (feet/inches and pounds) units using the toggle above the form.

Why do boys and girls have different BMI percentile charts?

Boys and girls grow at different rates and develop different amounts of muscle and body fat as they age, particularly once puberty begins. Because of this, a BMI that is average for a 12-year-old boy may not be average for a 12-year-old girl. Separate reference tables for each sex allow the percentile to reflect a fair comparison against same-sex, same-age peers.

My child's percentile seems high or low — should I be worried?

A single BMI percentile reading is just one data point and is not a diagnosis. Pediatricians look at growth trends over multiple visits, family history, muscle mass, and overall development rather than one number in isolation.
